What does God’s voice sound like?
“The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.” ~ Psalm 29:4
Like many moms, I tend to sleep with “one eye open” and very seldom get a good night’s sleep. Every morning my daughter asks me, “how was your night, mom? Did you sleep well?” Of course, I always give her the generic answer, “It was okay.”
Recently when she asked, to her amazement, I had a different answer. I said, “my night was awes-mazing (our word for awesome + amazing). I woke up in the middle of the night and heard God talk to me. He said, in a very gentle whisper, “Keep praying, just keep praying.” With a blank look on her face, she asked, “mom, what does God’s voice sound like?”
God’s voice has many sounds, and He speaks to us in so many ways. Although it can be a loud blast, He normally speaks to us in a gentle, caring, loving way. He talks to us through whispers, through a firm nudge or gut feeling telling us what to do (or not to do). He speaks through our minds and hearts. Sometimes He speaks through other people, music, scripture, birds, a gentle breeze. Perhaps something we read speaks clearly to us. The important thing is to keep our hearts and ears open to hear His voice and what He’s telling us.
Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. ” ~ John 12:30
We can’t have an intimate relationship with God without hearing God speak to us personally. God is always speaking to us; however, too often, many of us struggle to listen to His voice. It is drowned by our daily routines such as work, household chores, TV, social media, etc.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” ~ Psalm 46:10
How do you feel when you’re speaking to someone and they are ignoring you? How do you think God feels when He’s talking to us, and we ignore Him? He may be answering the prayers we have been crying out to Him, yet we are too busy to listen. Then we wonder (many times lashing out at God) if He can hear us. There’s so much God communicates to us daily, yet we are not ready to be still and listen. When we are still, our spiritual ears are tuned to listen to the ever so gentle whisper of God.
So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice,” ~ Hebrews 3:7
Be ready to hear His voice. Today, listen with confidence, knowing that He wants to speak to you, and He wants you to hear Him. Make an effort to be still and look for the simple and great signs God is giving you. Do not confine your perception of God. Pay close attention while going for a walk, in the still of the night, when reading the Bible. Pay close attention to the verses that speak directly into your heart. Whether God comes to us through loud blasts or whispers, let us be mindful and open our ears and hearts to His voice.
Prayer
Lord, please help me seek and listen to Your voice with all my heart so that I can have the kind of intimate relationship with You that will change my life forever. Please give me the wisdom, strength, and understanding to slow down and guard my heart against the influences of this world. Help me to know Your voice and not be deceived by evil and his lies. Help me filter all voices, thoughts, and decisions through the lens of Your righteousness and never-ending love. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, Amen.
